Opening Story

D r. Alexander Skutch, probably the world's foremost tropical ornithologist, was a long
time resident of San Isidro de El General, Costa Rica.

A Naturalist in Costa Rica, he recounts the standard method for the difficult and dangerous
journey from San Isidro to San Jose, the journey was a distance of some 135 kilometers, and amazingly took the better part of a week to travel. Skutch describes the thick jungles with trails so narrow, that two on horseback could not pass abreast one another and how finally he had to send the horse back and proceed on foot. These images from his book conjure within us a true sense of the magnificent, untouched, ocean of life that is the tropical rainforest. And do you know what?

It wasn't all that long ago.

San Isidro de El General and the surrounding mountain and beach communities of the Southern Pacific Zone have retained much of this natural splendor for one simple reason. Most of the years when widespread destruction and deforestation were wreaking havoc upon the rare and fragile ecosystems, this unique, region, through a special combination of diverse topography, difficult access and plain old luck, was largely spared the ravages suffered by so many tropical havens. The years have passed. The roads are in place. But the luck still holds for this area, which is still rich in nature's bounty, and for those fortunate few who can live in and around it. Just take a look at any topographical map. Costa Rica's highest point, Mount Chirripo (2.5 miles above sea level) Is only some 25 miles from the sea! The natural result is fast flowing clean rivers, cascading waterfalls, diverse cosystems, rich and varied flora and fauna, which the San Isidro / Southern Pacific zone are a true wonder. Couple this with a thoroughly modern town with all the conveniences of a big town and the charm, safety and
friendliness of a small one.
